ENGLISCHER GARTEN
(English Gardens) Then Englischer Garten stretches along the
banks of the Isar River in central Munich. These gardens were
created in 1789 at the site of a former hunting ground. The
English Garden is Munich's version of "Central Park," and is always
busy with street entertainers and people enjoying a brief lunch
break in the fresh air. You may rent boats at the
Kleinhesseloher See, and there is also a beer garden near the lake.
Open daily from dawn until dusk.
ODEONSPLATZ
This square in central
Munich is located at the intersection of two great Munich
boulevards: Ludwigstrasse and Prinzregentenstrasse. The
National Theater and the
Feldherrnhalle are both located at
this square, which lies a block away from the famed
Residenz. Take the time to visit
the beautiful gardens of the Hofgarten, located adjacent to the
plaza.
From the Odeonsplatz, walk down Prinzregentenstrasse towards the
Englischer Garten. This route will take you past the steel and
glass Bavarian State Chancellery, the Haus der Kunst (which exhibits
Nazi approved art), the Bavarian National Museum, down to the Isar
river and the Angel of Peace, a statue
which commemorates the end of the Franco-Prussian War.
