The
ROMAN FORUM is located in a valley between the Palatine Hill and
the Capitoline Hill. Originally a marsh, the Ancient Romans
drained the area and turned it into a bustling district containing
the city's most important political and religious buildings.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Forum fell into disuse and
continued to decay through the centuries. In the Middle Ages,
the area was used as a cattle pasture.
Today, all that is left of this area is a jumble of columns and
ruins amongst a beautiful garden area in the center of the city.
This is one of the few places in the city where you will find
serenity from the hustle and bustle of the city. Bring along a
picnic basket and relax in the jumble of ruins, cypresses, and
wildflowers.
