My trips -- 03-01, 12-03, 11-04:
I've driven through F
üssen more times than I can count on my way from Germany to Austria, or vice versa.  However, I have been there specifically to visit Neuschwanstein (and Hohenschwangau) three times.

First of all, although Hohenschwangau is usually an afterthought for visitors to the region, it is a beautiful castle in its own right.  While it may not hold a candle up to Neuschwanstein (few castles do), it is certainly worth a visit.  Best of all, you can
buy a ticket for both castles at the same time from the ticket booth in town.

I've visited Neuschwanstein once in the spring, once in the winter, and once in the fall.  I will say that each trip was unique and I didn't mind coming back at all.  Of course each time I was with a different group of people (I was playing tourist with visitors)
, but in case you can't tell from the website, I simply enjoy traveling around and I enjoyed each of my visits to these castles.
