FIRST VISIT
My first trip was as a stopover while driving from
Munich to Zurich. This trip didn't
turn out as planned for a number of reasons.
First mistake: We spent the prior evening in Munich at the
Hofruhaus drinking the
night away. 5 liters of beer, a little bit of bar hopping, a
trip to the clubs (you get the idea)...bottom line: we weren't able
to leave town until noon.
The late time leaving Munich meant we didn't arrive at the castles
until the early afternoon. Not late in the day by any stretch
of the imagination, but one mustn't forget that Neuschwanstain is a
HUGE tourist destination. Basically every tourist bus in
Germany makes a pit stop below the castle. We arrived too late
in the day to purchase tickets from the ticket booth, so we weren't
able to take a tour of the castle. Bummer.
Second mistake: Fssen is much closer to Munich than it is to
Zurich. In addition, it's a little bit out of the way (should
you be looking to make the same trip). So we ended up driving
well out of our way to see a castle which we couldn't take a tour of
anyway.
Looking back, however, I wouldn't have done anything differently.
A wild night at the Hofbruhaus is something you'll never forget.
And while we didn't get to go inside the castles, you can still walk
the grounds and take pictures from the outside. Neuschwanstein
was never finished, and Hohenschwangau is not as grandiose as its
neighbor castle.
Personally, I've never been a fan of castle tours. The great
part to me is the architecture and the setting, both of which are
free to all visitors to this mountain town.
