URBAN TRANSPORTATION
Munich, like most large European cities, has an excellent public
transportation system which is cheap and easy to use. The
Munich metro train system is divided into the U-Bahn and the S-Bahn.
U-Bahn is the downtown subway system, while the S-Bahn consists of
trains that run from the city center to the suburbs. U-Bahn
and S-Bahn trains share some of the same train stations, and travel
both underground and above ground along their lines.
Trains in Munich run daily from 5am-1am, and the frequency of the
trains depends on the location of the train stations. Stations
in the center of the city service multiple U- and S- train lines,
and have a higher frequency of trains. Trains stations in the
suburbs may only service one S- line and will have trains less
frequently.
You can buy tickets from machines at the train stations, from sales
desks, from newstands, and aboard buses and trams. You can
purchase tickets individually, in multi-ticket strips, or for
multiple day journeys. You must validate your tickets in
automatic stamping machines as you board the bus or train, or near
the escalators in train stations.
