Sintra
National Palace is a 15th Century royal Portuguese palace located in
the hills east of Lisbon. Today it the best preserved
medieval royal palace in Portugal, having served as a summer palace
for the royal family from the 15th to the 19th Century.
Much of the palace dates from 1415, when King John I of Portugal
sponsored a major building campaign. The palace combines
Gothic, Manueline, and Moorish styles. Perhaps the most
recognizable feature of the palace are its twin conical kitchen
chimneys, which rise above the rest of the palace grounds.
The palace is located in town, just a few minutes walk west from the
train station. From the palace, you can look up and see the
Castelo dos Mouros towering
above the town.
