Castelo dos Mouros, or the Moorish Castle, is a fortress that was built above the town of Sintra between the 9th and 10th Centuries.  Crusaders recaptured Sintra from the Moors in 1147, destroying much of the original fortress in the process. 

Only four of the original battlements remain.  The castle walls and towers offer breathtaking views of the Portuguese countryside and the town of Sintra and the National Palace of Sintra far below.  You can also glimpse Pena Palace on a neighboring hill.

 

 
  

Visitors to the Castle will see two walled segments totaling 450 meters in length.  Inside the castle is a centuries old cistern built by the Moors.
