Vienna,
like most major European cities, has an extensive network of trains,
buses, and trams available to its urban citizens.
You can pick up transportation maps at the Opern Passage/Karlsplatz
U-Bahn information counter (just South of the Ring, near Karlskirche).
The U-Bahn is Vienna's downtown subway/metro system. Lines 1,
2, and 4 all meet at the Opern/Karlsplatz
station. Subway stations are marked with "U" signs littered
around the city streets.
A separate metro system, the S-Bahn (Schellbahn) travels into the
city center from the suburbs.
Hopper buses 1A, 2A, and 3A stop near major Old Town Sights.
Horsedrawn carriages, which can be expensive, are available from
stands in Stephensplatz,
Heldenplatz, or Albertinaplatz.
Finally, taxicabs are available and can be ordered by calling 01 21
20 0, 01 40 10 0 or 01 60 16 0.
For transportation from Vienna International Airport to the city,
you may take the 20 minute shuttle to the City Air Terminal, located
in the city center Shuttle buses run regularly between the
airport and City Air Terminal. Shuttle buses also run from the
airport to the Südbahnhof and Westbahnhof train stations. The
S-Bahn line 7 also will take you to the city center, but will
include numerous stops along the way. For more information on
the shuttle buses, call 01 93 000 23 000.
