ST.
CHARLES' CHURCH (KARLSKIRCHE) was built in the early 18th
Century and was designed by the Austrian baroque architect Johann
Fischer von Erlach. Hapsburg Emperor Karl VI dedicated the
church in thanks for the end of a plague which had hit Vienna hard
in 1713. The building began in 1715 and took 23 years to
complete.
Today,
the church stands just to the south of the Ring road outside of the
Old Town. It is the largest Baroque church north of the Alps,
and is topped by a 72m high dome. In front of the church
stands two columns portraying the life of the church's patron saint
Charles Borromeo.
The church lies in Vienna's vast Karlsplatz, and has a reflecting
pool in front of it. The interior of the church is decorated
in baroque style, with a magnificently painted interior of the dome.
Entrance to the church is free and it is open daily from 8am to 6pm.
STEPHANSDOM(St. Stephens Cathedral) dominates the Old Town. It towers
above shoppers and sightseeings in Stephansplatz.
HOFBURGThe Imperial Palace of the Hapsburg Family is a grand complex of
buildings, monuments, statues, and gardens.
