VIENNA'S
HOFBURG PALACE (Imperial Palace) took more than six centuries to
build. The original fortress was built in 1275, and was
upgraded to the Schweizerhof (Swiss Courtyard) with its Schweizertor
(Swiss Gate) in the 16th Century. Additional wings were added
during the 17th and 18th Centuries. These wings, all decorated
lavishly in the Baroque style, include the Reitschule (Riding
School) which houses the world-famous Lipizzaner horses. The
Kaiserappartements (Royal Apartments) were built in the 19th
Century, and new sections were added on as recently as 1913.
Today, the palace complex totals 18 wings, 2600 rooms, and 19
courtyards.
