HOHENSALZBURG
FORTRESS (Festung Hohensalzburg) is the highlight of any tour to
Salzburg. The fortress lies atop a hill and dominates the
Salzburg skyline.
The fortress was built in 1077
and over the next 600 years, constant additions were made to its
size. It reached its present day extent in 1681.
A tour of this extensive complex will take you through ornate
palatial chambers and up to the top of the fortress for a
magnificent view of the city.
The more
adventurous visitors can walk up the steep hill leading up to the castle, but
for those looking for a relaxed experience, take the funicular rail
car up to the top and enjoy the spectacular scenery on the way up.
The Hohensalzburg Fortress grounds are open daily 8:30am-8pm
mid-June to mid-September, 9am-6pm mid-September to mid-March, and

The interior is open daily 9am-6pm mid-June to mid-September,
