Belfast
is the capital and largest city in Northern Ireland. This
capital is an up-and-coming city, having risen in popularity as a
tourist destination in the decade-plus since the Good Friday
Agreement of 1998. It is now the fourth most visited weekend
destination in all of the United Kingdom and provides a great way
for weekenders from all around Western Europe to experience a taste
of Irish culture.
Belfast remains relatively uncrowded, as compared to its better
known partner of Dublin. And it is a prettier city than it's
Republic counterpart: the center of Belfast is small enough to
explore on foot, and here you can wander through stately Victorian
buildings and a pedestrian shopping district.
Belfast also offers a
great nightlife, especially in the pubs and clubs around Queen's
University. When in Belfast, don't forget to visit "The Bot,"
as the locals refer to the hugely popular Botanical Inn (23-27
Malone Rd). This splendid pub / sports bar features live music
and friendly people, and also has an upstairs club area. It is
a fresh twist on the age-old Irish pub, modern yet still holds on to
that comfortable Irish charm.
