The bridge at RIALTO is one of only three bridges across
Venice's Grand Canal. However, this bridge is not simply a
walkway across the water. Throughout the Middle Ages the
Rialto was Europe's financial and banking center. Today,
the bridge is home to a number of shopping stalls selling Venetian
wares. The bridge is also in the middle of Venice's food
markets. Wander through the fruit and vegetable stalls, but
leave time to enjoy the sights of the fish market, filled with the
day's fresh catch.
Once you have worked up an appetite, sit down at one of the many
open air restaurants on either side of the Grand Canal for a tasty
North Italian meal with a view of this historic bridge.
