Most tourists never get a chance to visit Venice's Lagoon Islands.
But if you take a vaporetti water bus, you can spend a
comfortable day enjoying these islands away from the hordes of
tourists crawling through Venice's old city.
Murano
All Venetian glass has been made on the island of
Murano since 1291, when the fires were moved away from the city as a
fire precaution. Visit the Glass Museum to see how the skill
of glass blowing has evolved over the centuries.
Burano
Burano is old Venice without the crowds. The
island a fishing community with colorful canalside houses, narrow
streets and sun-splashed squares. Lace is also a famed product
of this community and there is even a Lace-Making School on the
island.
