City (Holy See) is the world's smallest independent state.
This tiny state consists of 109 acres of land located around St.
Peter's Basilica, the legal boundaries of which were finalized in
the Treaty of the Lateran in 1929.
The Pope is the absolute monarch of this tiny state and rules over
the 200-plus inhabitants of his country. Approximately 800
more day workers live in and around Rome and commute to the Vatican
to work.
