Sintra
is a UNESCO World Heritage Site east of Lisbon, noted for its 19th
Century architecture. Notably, this town became the first
center of architecture in the European Romantic style. The
ornate palaces and parks in these cool hills east of the capital
city combine Gothic, Egyptian, Moorish, and Renaissance elements
creating a unique site that influenced the development of landscape
architecture throughout Europe.
Sintra is located just east of Lisbon,
between the capital city and Portugal's West Coast. It can be
easily reached by a 45 minute long train ride from
Santa Apolónia, Oriente, Campolide and Rossio train stations. The town is a 10
minute walk from the station.
From town, take the circular 434 bus route to visit the various
palaces. Day tickets cost 4 Euro and can be purchased from the
bus driver.
You can also walk up to the Castelo dos Mouros from town, but be
prepared for a steep one-hour climb up a windy road with no
sidewalks and barely any room for pedestrians. You will have
to jump out of the way often as buses, taxis, and private cars
careen around turns with reckless abandon.
