(MUSEUM OF ART HISTORY) was opened in 1891 along with its
neighbor, the Naturhistorisches Museum, by the Hapsburg Emperor
Franz Joseph I. The two museums face each other across a
garden plaza (Maria-Theresien Platz), and are just across the Ring
from the Hofburg Palace.
The construction of the Kunsthistorisches Museum finally allowed the
grand Hapsburg art collection to be housed under one roof. The
building is rectangular and holds a 60m high dome in its center.
STEPHANSDOM(St. Stephens Cathedral) dominates the Old Town. It towers
above shoppers and sightseeings in Stephansplatz.
HOFBURGThe Imperial Palace of the Hapsburg Family is a grand complex of
buildings, monuments, statues, and gardens.
St. Charles Church lies just south of the Ring. This majestic
church with is beautiful reflecting pool is the largest Baroque
church north of the Alps.
