IN A NUTSHELL
WHAT: Appenzellerland.
WHERE: Easternmost Swiss province of Appenzell, one valley over from the tiny country of Liechtenstein.
WHY: Alpine lakes, snow capped mountains, hiking trails and famous Appenzell cheese; hut-to-hut hiking; skiing in the winter.
WHEN: June to September for the real hiking trails.  Spring and fall for outdoor walks and sightseeing.  Snowsports in the winter.
HOW: Day trip for those in Southern Germany, Austria, or Switzerland.

Appenzellerland is the Switzerland that you see in cartoons and movies.  Little villages with brown cows and Swiss shepherds in traditional costumes.  Green alpine meadows peppered with flowers and surrounded by towering snowcapped peaks.

You'll find well-marked hiking trails, complete with cable handholds at those narrow spots, signposts with accurate walking times, and cozy hiking huts to rest your feet or refill your provisions.
